Al​gida

Unilever is one of the most important players in FMCG sector of Turkey and the company that is concern of our project is Algida located under Unilever’s umbrella. Algida is the greatest ice cream producer and distributor in Turkey with nearly 67% of market share and it provides 1/3 of Unilever Turkey’s turnover and 40% of its profit. Algida Turkey has a wide production range which including impulse and food service as out of home consumption, and in home as in home consumption.​

Algida has started their operations for Turkey in 1990.  Today, Algida Turkey has a broad network for every state of Turkey and they export their products to 11 countries including Turkish Republics and Balkans. Additionally, Unilever Turkey has a leader role among Middle and Eastern European Regions thanks to Research & Development Center which is founded by Unilever.  Factory of Algida is located in Çorlu/Turkey with total area 65167 m² and production runs for 42 weeks in a year starting at December until September every year. This factory has the latest technologic equipment in terms of efficiency and responsiveness. Algida Factory has the important quality certificates such as TS EN ISO 9001, TS EN ISO 14001 and “Health Mark” with adaptable European Union in terms of being first ever for a factory.  Ice cream consumption per person increased from 0, 5 liter to 2, 3 liter due to investments of Algida in Turkey and ice cream consumption has been rising annually. Moreover, Algida Turkey has the developed distribution channel for the FMCG sector.   
 

After manufacturing, distribution process starts. The first step of distribution process is transfer of end products to 4 main storage areas belong to Unilever which are located in Trakya Industry Region, İstanbul Sarıgazi, Merko Karamürsel and Bursa whose capacities are 22.500, 9.785, 7.840 and 12.740 palettes respectively. Besides, products imported from Holland and exported abroad are stored in the depot in Trakya. The following step is transfer from main depots to point of deliveries and 6 general storage areas and this step is called “Primary distribution”. General storage areas are positioned in İstanbul, İzmir and Ankara with capacities of 750 palettes per area. In those cities, Unilever has its own distribution network and in whole Turkey, there are 89 points of delivery and Algida puts products of its 146 distributors in those depots. For Algida, it is not important which product belongs to which distributor, this condition is totally left to distributors’ responsibilities. As final step, distributors make transfers to both local groceries and key accounts. Besides, Algida sends products to key accounts in İstanbul, İzmir and Ankara through its own distribution network. Distribution to key accounts is named as “Modern Trade” without caring whether Algida or distributors do the transfer and distribution to local stores is defined as “Secondary Distribution”.
